In our December 2011 update we added elevation correction to our online map and graph for premium users. This elevation correction system uses the same data that Ground Control does in WKO+. Please note that our Elevation Correction feature is most accurate in the US but internationally results will vary.
Read a blog post from TrainingPeaks CEO Gear Fisher on this feature.
What our elevation correction does is take your GPS recorded positional data and compare it to the USGS survey database and correct your elevation where necessary. This will only work when you have GPS elevation data. Barometric only elevation data cannot be corrected. Some situations may cause spurious data, such as:
- Your workout goes through a tunnel
- when your workout is in a canyon and you have an imprecise GPS lock
- road cuts that aren't in the USGS survey database.
These situations will correct but may contain erroneous data. Locations outside of the US can still be corrected but will have less precision than inside the US.
Everyone will find this useful, but runners relying on normalized graded pace to calculate TSS will find it exceptionally useful.
Once your file has been uploaded and you click the elevation correction button, our server will compare your position data against the database and return a comparison for you to approve. If you feel the correction (green) is valid, click Apply. If you don't like the correction you can click cancel.
If you download the file attached to the quick view you will be downloaded the original file, not the corrected file. If you wish to 'undo' an elevation correction you can download this file and then re-upload it.
Batch downloading through WKO+ will retrieve the elevation corrected file.
Bulk exporting from the Export Data option under Account Settings will download the original file.
